At 76, retired teacher Judy Kennedy was ready to simplify her life. The upkeep and rising property taxes on her large 19th-century home in Yarmouth had become too much. So, she turned to her son, Tanner, and said, “Let’s do the ADU thing!”
Judy sold the big house and is investing $400,000 of the proceeds to build a beautiful two-story accessory dwelling unit (ADU) right next door to Tanner’s home in Pownal. Once the 750-square-foot home — built by Harriman Construction LLC in Yarmouth — is completed later this year, she’ll enjoy living mortgage-free and rent-free—with enough money left over to comfortably boost her retirement savings.
But for Judy, the biggest reward isn’t financial. It’s about being close to the people she loves most.
“I’ll be with family,” she said. “We’re teaming up, helping each other, and creating a little community.”
